Magazine Loan:

I have changed the loan period for magazines to 1 week. This affects all mags including children's/teen's. A question from a patron brought this up and since we do allow holds on magazines, waiting three weeks for one to be returned (esp weeklies) seems unreasonable. I'll review in early April so in the meantime, let me know what you observe.

[Update 4/10/2022: some of the schedule has changed since this 3/7 post]

These special main desk shifts were part of the new schedule, but then I didn't transfer them to the staff calendar (not to mention some things may have changed). I have put them on now, but also want to be sure they are on everyone's radar.

Mondays:
Mary-Ellen, 2-5
Scott, 5:30-7
[Sam - back up in eve]

Wednesdays:
Scott, 5-6

Thursdays:
[Sam - back up in a.m.]

Fridays:
Sam, 9-12

Of course, we are all on deck to cover people being out, during programs, etc.

Keep me posted on how coverage is working out.

Space Planning:
What's happening? Placework put together several sketches that Scott and I have been playing with. We met with them last Wednesday to go over all of our notes (many!) and then to put together two draft plans that include as many of the improvements that we like as possible.

At the end of all this, the goal is to have a "master plan" showing where we would like to get to, and a couple of "phases" that we can implement along the way to that ideal vision. I'm not sure exactly when we will get to that point, or what additional steps are going to happen before we settle on a master plan to move forward with.

Some of our major priorities:
  • Better sight lines to public areas
  • Better sight lines between youth and adult service areas
  • More individual quiet work spaces of different types
  • Seating "nooks" spread throughout the library
  • Sound dampening solutions in various areas
  • More flexibility to rearrange areas/furniture in the future and as-needed now
  • Better access to activity room
  • After hours access to meeting room
  • Attractive entrance and curb appeal
  • Lower height shelving
  • Garden/patio more visible from inside library

That's a lot! Not all of these things will be able to happen, or at least not in a huge way, but these are things that are driving planning.

Library of Things:
Added:
  • Radon detector,
  • travel plug adapter,
  • DVD/Blu-Ray player.

Do you have ideas or questions? Check in with Scott. Scott is also working on a list/handout and either a page on the website or with Sam find a way to find easily in the catalog.

Primary Orderers for collections:
  • ANF, DVD, Music CD, Library of Things, Magazine subscriptions: Scott
  • AF, LP, Audiobooks: Tricia
  • CH, Teen: Courtney
Patron requests? Definitely pass them on.

Adult collections: If it is an "in-the-moment" answer-needed, it's fine to pass it on to the person who is here and they can decide what to do.

Items will be entered into Koha at the time they are ordered. This way, we can place holds, give info to patrons, and avoid duplicate orders.

The overall workflow for ordering, processing, cataloging is being reviewed and finalized -- please ask questions so I know what needs to be discussed or explained.

Delivery/pick up:

The Friends of the Library are still happy to deliver or pick up books when people can't or are worried about going out. I have delivered a few things and I'm very happy to. Fine to offer this option to patrons who might need it.
